INSIDE THE PROJECT - A Case Study
When we were asked to price this security desk with curved Caesarstone®, we knew it could be done so we undertook the challenge. Since we could not find any Bay Area granite shops to even give us pricing, we decided to keep it in-house, allowing us maximum control. Part of our 60,000 square foot facility houses our own metal/machine shop, so we were able to build our own heating system capable of handling larger size slabs. Handling and bending piping hot 200+ degree heavy slabs of stone is complicated and costly. But we’re happy to announce that we have developed a process!
From the designer’s initial concepts we went to work. Our engineering department did solid modeling drawings so that the Caesarstone® could be cut to finished size prior to forming. Accuracy was key, as all parts needed to fit perfectly in the end. Click on images to enlarge.
Once engineering was completed and cut lists were established, the shop went to work. The substructure needed to be light enough to move easily, but strong enough to support the weight of the stone slabs (estimated at 500 lbs each) once assembled. Click on images to enlarge:
Veneers needed to be custom made at the same angle that the stone would travel up the desk; we were able to accomplish this at the designer’s request.
Once the stone was formed and assembled, we did some fine fitting - this would ensure minimum disturbance for our client during installation.
In the end, working with our partner granite fabricator, Great Spaces USA was able to accomplish what most millwork shops are unable to do, that is to bend stone.
